Nearly 50% of Americans do not see the dentist regularly. At Helms Family Dentistry, we know that routine prevention is the foundation for great dental health. Huntsville dentist Dr. Alec Helms recommends preventative treatment, like dental cleanings, to help you achieve and maintain optimum health.
We know that sometimes you may have some catching up to do on your dental cleanings if you have not been to the dentist in a while. We offer several different types of hygiene appointments to our patients, and Dr. Helms will be able to make a recommendation for a cleaning that will get you caught up and back on track.
Oral Cancer Screening
Each hygiene appointment will include an oral cancer screening. Your dentist and hygienist are your partners when it comes to early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer, and they will alert you if they see anything that looks suspicious.
At your appointment with our dental hygienist, you will receive a dental cleaning. Dental cleanings can range from a regular dental prophylaxis to a catch-up cleaning. We also offer more extensive hygiene appointments to treat gum disease.
Regular cleanings typically involve removal of any superficial plaque followed by a dental polish. Plaque is a bio-film created from food that leaves residue on the teeth mixing with saliva and bacteria. It is the white matter you sometimes find on the surface of your teeth if you do not brush regularly. Left alone, plaque can harden into tartar and eventually cause gum disease.
Our more extensive cleanings, such as periodontal treatments and root planing and scaling, involve removing tartar from the surface of your teeth and sometimes removing it from below the gumline. Our hygienist is an expert at gently and thoroughly sterilizing the area below the gumline using specially designed instruments.
At Helms Family Dentistry, we believe education is an important part of your dental treatment. We can teach you techniques and tricks to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy in between appointments.
How Often Do I Need a Cleaning?
Most dentists recommend that you have a dental cleaning every six months. If you have an active periodontal infection or if you are prone to dental plaque build-up, Dr. Alec Helms may recommend more frequent treatment to keep you healthy and comfortable.
Regular dental hygiene appointments not only promote excellent dental health, but they also allow Dr. Helms to perform regular dental exams. These regular exams help us to remain vigilant and to catch any developing dental conditions, such as decay.
